Hannover Messe 2023 – Making the difference

HANNOVER MESSE, with the motto "Making the difference", will take place this year from 17 to 21 April.

HANNOVER MESSE is the world's leading trade fair for the industry. Many interesting exhibitors from more than 60 countries fully represent all topics of the industrial value chain, from single components to smart factories as well as trends like energy efficiency, lightweight construction, and additive manufacturing. At HANNOVER MESSE you will meet thought leaders and users, startups and global market leaders, discuss with peers at eye level, and at the same time use your visit to the show for networking and continuing education.

Fraunhofer IOSB will also be represented this year. The business units "Automation and Digitalization" and "Inspection and Optronic Systems" will be presenting a range of topics.

Halodome – AI- and camera-based anomaly detection for quality assurance

The Halodome exhibit is an AI-based quality assurance process. The system needs only a few training examples to learn how a component should look correctly. If the system is confronted with new views that deviate from this, then the system recognizes the deviations and indicates the deviating areas in the camera image. The results are intuitively presented to a worker, who can view and finally check them. The worker can overwrite the system results, do additional editing, and even feed his revisions back to the system for follow-up training. Initially, the system requires few training examples and can be put into operation quickly and easily. During operation, it learns from the operator and gradually improves. The human always remains the final control authority. The system can thus be used cost-effectively for new components as long as the anomalies are detectable in the camera image.

Lighthouse project SWAP: Heterogeneous, workload-optimized robot teams and production architectures.

A data hub based on OPC UA ensures the manufacturer-independent networking of all assets.

The Fraunhofer production architecture "SWAP-IT" enables distributed, collaborative and self-organized production environments in various use cases with consideration of workload optimization. The new operational concept with focus on modularization and uniform interfaces realizes the flexible use of field resources and their capabilities.

ISuTest^® – Automated vulnerability scanning for industrial automation components

The Industrial Security Testing Framework ISuTest^® is a tool for finding vulnerabilities in the implementations of automation components. ISuTest^® is designed as an open, extensible framework and thus sets itself apart from commercial competitors with closed-source software. The direct target group of ISuTest^® are manufacturers and integrators of automation components. It supports its users from the setup of a vulnerability test, to the execution, to the isolation of vulnerabilities to the post-processing of the bug to the developer, who can subsequently fix it.

FA³ST Eco-Twin and support for time series data

The exhibit depicts an example for the use of digital twins in form of Industie 4.0 compatible asset administration shells for everey production plant and every product. FA³ST services and tools are used to build the asset administration shells and to implement them for operation in production environments. The demonstrator combines production data with Eco-parameters (energy curent, air pressure) to calculate an energy footprint for the whole life cycle of each single product and makes it tracable fort he user.

open62541 - Open source OPC UA stack

open62541 is an open implementation of OPC UA, the world language of machine-to-machine communication, programmed in C throughout. This makes the software, which was developed in significant parts at Fraunhofer IOSB in Karlsruhe, extremely resource-efficient and runs on any type of hardware from small embedded systems to large production plants.

Transfer-X: Bringing the opportunities of the data economy to SMEs

The end-to-end digitization of value chains promises major benefits, including resilience to failures and bottlenecks at individual suppliers, verifiability of sustainability standards, and progress in the circular economy. In the large-scale Catena-X project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BWWK) and involving several Fraunhofer Institutes and departments of Fraunhofer IOSB, an exemplary data ecosystem with corresponding services, applications and connectors for the automotive industry has been under development since 2020. However, such digital platforms can only be successful if a critical mass of potential users actually participates. This is precisely what the new transformation hub Transfer-X, co-initiated and led by Fraunhofer IOSB, is working towards.
