The research focus in the field of warning sensors includes the characterization of the environment and background as well as the acquisition of information about potential threat signatures. Warning sensor concepts are developed for different threat scenarios. Approaches for the use of novel technologies for civil and military warning sensors are developed.
For the protection of persons, platforms and buildings as well as the monitoring of facilities or borders, electro-optical sensor technology is an important component for early detection and warning. Such systems must operate reliably, autonomously and, if possible, without false alarms.
In order to meet a wide range of requirements, we deal with issues ranging from the ultraviolet to the infrared spectral range. The areas of sensor technology for detection, signatures of objects, threats and backgrounds as well as atmospheric influences on the performance of systems are illuminated.
In addition to interdisciplinary expertise, we have extensive measurement technology and laboratories to characterize threats (e.g. propulsion signatures of missiles). The knowledge of specific electro-optical properties of objects is the basis for the design, development and evaluation of warning systems and is indispensable for carrying out simulations and creating models. The regular organization of and participation in measurement campaigns on a national and international scale serves to collect signature data and effects and to validate models.
