Projects and products

Our research and development work happens within the framework of projects - these include equally R&D contracts with industrial customers, publicly funded (collaborative) research projects, and pre-competitive research projects funded by Fraunhofer. You can browse through many of these projects below - as well as products, i.e. results of our R&D activities that have reached a high level of technological maturity.

Please note:

  • The most recently updated projects and products are displayed first.
  • You can filter the list by department or business unit assignment as well as by free-text search terms - but for the latter, the spelling must be exact.

  • Quantum ghost imaging (lighthouse project QUILT)

Remote sensing by means of entangled photons

Novel applications of quantum technology for imaging - this is what the lead project QUILT is all about. At Fraunhofer IOSB, a technology for remote sensing using entangled photons is being developed.

  • Secure Plug and Work

A collaborative project within the framework of the BMBF announcement “Intelligent networking in production – A contribution to the future project Industry 4.0”

Faster set-up and changeover: In the project, consistent plug-and-work capability was achieved in production-related software components - using the AutomationML and OPC UA standards. In the process, non-I4.0-communication-capable components are also retrofitted with I4.0 features.

  • Signature Assessment

The influence of the atmosphere on the thermal image

The project "Signature Assessment" deals with the evaluation of camouflage materials, the analysis of building materials for the design of thermographic investigations and the verification and validation of thermal simulations.

  • This work area is concerned with the evaluation of signature changing measures by computer-aided, mathematical as well as behavioral-physiological investigations. Using image or video data, the ultimate goal is to determine how various changes in the signature affect camouflage performance, i.e. the change in detection, recognition and identification by humans and algorithms.

  • BRDF: Measurement of the directional reflection of surfaces

The bidirectional reflectance distribution function describes the reflection properties of a material surface

Optical reflections on surfaces of objects and materials play a major role in many areas. BRDF is used in the analysis of materials to obtain detailed information about the optical reflection properties.

  • © Fraunhofer IOSB

Within the E-MonAut project, measures for the optimization of the operational management are investigated and evaluated. These measures are expected to make a comparatively large contribution to the reduction of the final energy demand with a relatively low investment volume while at the same time actively protecting the building fabric (e.g. prevention of mold growth) and considering the individual user needs (comfort and economic criteria, information requirements).

  • Urban heat islands degrade the quality of life in many urban centers. This is why local councils of fast-growing megapoli work hand in hand with scientific communities and research facilities to identify and reduce the man-made sources of UHI by imposing forestation, employing sustainable and heat-emissive materials and strengthening public transport.
