Our research and development work happens within the framework of projects - these include equally R&D contracts with industrial customers, publicly funded (collaborative) research projects, and pre-competitive research projects funded by Fraunhofer.   • Images are a fundamental tool for our understanding of the world both at microscopic and macroscopic length scales. The simplest way to acquire an image is to analyze light through spatially resolved intensity measurements, e.g., on a camera, but this approach is limited by diffraction. The development of imaging techniques that beat the diffraction limit is known as super-resolution.

  • Free-space optical communications is an excellent example of a technology with both military and civilian relevance and also with compelling scientific timeliness and good market prospects. Based on experience of the IOSB’s employees in the area of laser beam propagation through turbulence, new laser-based telecommunications concepts are being designed, implemented and tested against atmospheric disturbances.

  • RLT-Opt – Holistic optimization of ventilation and air conditioning systems

    General methods for the holistic process optimization of ventilation and air-conditioning systems (RLT stands for »raumlufttechnische Anlagen«; English: Ventilation and air conditioning systems).

    The RLT-Opt project is developing new methods and tools to enable the inventory and savings potential to be quickly recorded in the first step, so that corresponding optimization measures can be implemented in a targeted manner in the second step. The first step is to analyze the tightness and operating mode of the ventilation and air conditioning systems. The operation of the ventilation and air conditioning systems is successively optimized by sensor-based recording and evaluation of essential operating parameters.

  • The global objective of the ML4Heat project is the development of methods and software tools for the optimization of the operation of existing district heating networks under energetic and economic aspects. For this purpose, sensor and operating data of the district heating transfer stations as well as the heat supply shall be collected to a large extent and evaluated by means of machine learning methods.
