Cultural heritage protection and Crisis management

Fraunhofer IOSB has already carried out several national and international projects in the field of cultural heritage protection. We have developed solutions that can be used both in the long term and in the short term for crisis management.

To create a picture of the condition of immovable cultural assets, we use large-scale sensors, which we process in a knowledge platform. The information in this knowledge platform is interconnected, allowing users to find out about all the interrelationships and influences of the various parameters. For example, we have already monitored the microclimate in the Sanssouci Palace Park using humidity and temperature sensors and the building integrity of the Palazzo dei Consoli di Gubbio using strain gauges.

For short-term preparation, we have developed the WALKER route map software. This application enables the creation of route maps for the evacuation of cultural objects from museums and historical sites. We thus offer a low-threshold solution for preparing for crises and opening a channel of communication with the fire department. Our solutions help protect and preserve our cultural heritage and support relevant actors in crisis situations. Cooperation between administrators and rescue services can be flexibly tailored to meet specific local requirements.

Our projects in this field

KERES

In the KERES project, we worked with the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg to investigate the effects of climate change on the Sanssouci and Babelsberg parks. This information was incorporated into a situation report that mapped the vitality of the plants and trees in the park, for example, and combined it with sensor data.

WALKER

WALKER offers a low-threshold solution for creating evacuation route maps for cultural heritage sites. This low-threshold solution enables museums to create emergency plans and provide rescue services with the most important information for rescuing historical objects.

ECHOES

In the ECHOES project, we are involved in the development of the Cultural Heritage Cloud (ECCCH). This platform provides professionals and researchers in the field of cultural heritage with access to data, scientific resources, training, and advanced digital tools tailored to their needs. In this way, it brings fragmented communities in the field of cultural heritage together into a new community around the digital commons.
