The Hannover Messe with the motto “Industrial Transformation“ will take place this year from 12 to 16 April. Even though there will be no presence meetings, Hannover Messe 2021 promises to create a knowledge and networking platform for the manufacturing industry.

In the ML4P - Machine Learning for Production initiative launched in 2017, six Fraunhofer institutes (project management: IOSB) are developing a process model and a continuous chain of software tools based on concrete use cases in order to make AI methods sustainably usable in industry.
The declared goal is the optimisation of complex production processes, especially in the industrial environment, with the help of the now broad spectrum of AI and machine learning methods. Existing optimisation potential in production can thus be identified, evaluated and addressed in a targeted and beneficial manner. In addition, it is being investigated how intelligent plant components can be systematically taken into account in the engineering process of new plants in the future.

QSelect enables intuitive digital defect documentation directly on the workpiece - for production contexts where automatic visual inspection is not possible or too expensive. QSelect consists of a projector/camera unit that is mounted above the component and a mobile handpiece in which a laser pointer and buttons are installed.
The special feature of the system is the defect marking with a pointing gesture in combination with a voice dialogue system and the direct visualisation of the documentation through a projected marking on the inspected component. The system's target groups are plant integrators, special plant and mechanical engineering, the automotive industry, the manufacturing industry and companies in the fields of maintenance, troubleshooting and assembly.

CC-KING is the competence centre for AI engineering of the Karlsruhe research institutions Fraunhofer IOSB, FZI Forschungszentrum Informatik and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). We help companies to make AI and ML methods usable in practice. To this end, we bridge the gap between data science and established engineering disciplines and develop a systematic approach for the use of AI-based components in complex and possibly safety-critical systems. The goals are efficient and plannable development and sustainable operation of these AI solutions. CC-KING is funded by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Housing Construction Baden-Württemberg.

The key to using AI is not only to achieve the best possible results, but also to build trust in the AI decisions. For users, an AI should therefore be trustworthy and comprehensible. At IOSB, we therefore not only develop AI methods, but also provide explanations for the AI's decisions.
With our XAI Toolbox - the abbreviation stands for eXplainable Artificial Intelligence - we also create corresponding explanations for already available AI methods. The software makes it possible to visualise different types of explanations for an existing AI procedure and its respective decisions. Thus, the most suitable approach can be selected quickly.

The Industrial Security Testing Framework ISuTest is a tool for finding vulnerabilities in networked automation components. Detected vulnerabilities can be remedied by the manufacturer and thus reduce the component's attack surface. After all, robustness against attacks will be a quality criterion in the future that manufacturers can use to set themselves apart from others.

ISuTest is designed as an open, extensible framework and thus sets itself apart from commercial competitors with closed-source software. ISuTest's direct target group are manufacturers and integrators of automation components. It supports its users from the setup of a vulnerability test to the execution to the isolation of vulnerabilities to the post-processing of the bug to the developer, who can subsequently fix it.

The Karlsruhe Research Factory, founded and jointly operated by Fraunhofer IOSB, Fraunhofer ICT and the wbk Institute for Production Technology of KIT, creates a unique environment for researching the future topic of “intelligent production“ on real processes in a practical way. Supported by the latest methods of Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, science and industry are jointly transferring innovative, challenging manufacturing processes from the idea into operational practice in the shortest possible time.
The aim is for manufacturing companies as well as machine and plant manufacturers to be able to serve the market with the new products much earlier. In this way, “immature“ - still in the development stage - processes can be industrialised much more quickly. In addition, established processes are also to be further improved through the use of intelligent production engineering methods and the bundling of the research partners' competences.

The idea of the Smart Factory Web is to provide a marketplace for industrial production that mediates between production orders and registered factory equipment and capabilities. The platform for this was developed at Fraunhofer IOSB. This is to be achieved by aligning capacities across production sites, partly by flexibly adapting production capabilities and partly by sharing resources, assets and inventory.
