This year's HANNOVER MESSE, according to the motto “Shaping the future with technology”, will take place from March 31 to April 4.

HANNOVER MESSE is the world's leading industrial technology trade fair. Many interesting exhibitors from over 60 countries present themselves at the industrial fair in Hannover, fully covering all topics of the industrial value chain, from individual components to intelligent factories, as well as trends such as energy efficiency, lightweight construction and additive manufacturing. Factory-X – Data ecosystem for factory equipment manufacturers and customers

In Factory-X, several dozen project partners are building an open data ecosystem for factory equipment suppliers and their customers – from factory operators, machine builders and their component suppliers to providers of automation technology and industrial software. The goals are to enable sovereign data exchange and to develop software solutions, so-called business applications, for various use cases. Factory-X is a beacon project within the Manufacturing-X initiative and uses the preliminary work of relevant projects, such as Gaia-X and Catena-X. Fraunhofer IOSB represents the participating research partners in the Factory-X steering committee.

Factory-X Circular Economy on the Basis of Asset Administration Shells

Efficient resource management through intelligent submodel templates

Our innovative submodel templates support informed decisions for the sustainable handling of machines and components – whether at the end of their service life, during maintenance or in the event of failures. They form the data basis for R-Grading, a crucial concept in the circular economy.

The FA³ST Viewer can be used to visualize the Asset Administration Shells (AAS) of machines and components, as well as their submodels. At the same time, the FA³ST Service, as the AAS server, ensures the hosting of these digital twins. As the project progresses, additional tools from the FA³ST Ecosystem will be integrated to further optimize the creation, networking and use of Asset Administration Shells through AI-supported processes.

Factory-X Manufacturing as a Service (MaaS)

Objective: Quickly find alternative suppliers – make supply chains more resilient

Manufacturing as a Service (MaaS) supports the transition to flexible and resilient supply chains. By automatically matching required and available manufacturing capabilities, tools and material inventories, the MaaS concept helps manufacturers quickly and easily find alternative suppliers. This makes it easier to set up new supply chains efficiently and strengthens resilience to unexpected disruptions – an important step towards a resilient production environment.

The Information Management and Production Control (ILT) department of Fraunhofer IOSB supports this approach as a scientific partner. With the development of the Manufacturer Information Service (MIS), we are creating a digital solution that enables manufacturers to make their offers and manufacturing capabilities visible in a targeted manner. The MIS facilitates matchmaking between suppliers and potential customers, thus simplifying the search for new partners and supply chains.

energy data-X - The data space for the energy sector based on Gaia-X

A common data space for the German energy industry to digitally connect the electricity, transportation and heating sectors and improve the integration of renewable energies: This is the vision of energy data-X. The project is a GAIA-X beacon project and is intended to enable innovative digital business models for all market participants. The consortium consists of partners from the Energy Sector, the IT Industry and Science - including Fraunhofer IOSB-AST, which supports many transformation projects in the energy and utilities sector with its expertise.

DIAMOND – Digital plant modeling with neutral data formats

The DIAMOND project is developing and testing a common data model that can be adapted to different use cases, as well as a modern data exchange via shared data spaces. In addition to technical solutions, the project also considers the organizations and needs of the people involved in the companies. The focus of the project, which is funded by the EU and the German federal government and involves 25 consortium partners (plus Fraunhofer IOSB as a subcontractor), is on the process of plant design and construction in the automotive industry.

AI Systems Engineering & Digital Twins

CHAISE – Toolbox for AI Systems Engineering

From data integration, model development and training to continuous monitoring during operation: CHAISE, the Tool Chain for AI Systems Engineering.

Building on the PAISE process model, CHAISE offers a toolbox for AI Systems Engineering – to provide practical support for the development of systems with AI components. CHAISE includes established open-source components such as JupyterLab as a web-based development platform or MLflow for managing ML models. These are complemented by in-house developments from Fraunhofer IOSB, in particular the FROST® server for managing sensor data and the eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) toolbox.

FA³ST Ecosystem

FA³ST Ecosystem: AI-supported development and integration of Asset Administration Shells (AAS)

Companies face numerous challenges when developing and using Asset Administration Shells (AAS): heterogeneous data sources, complex specifications and the high costs of achieving standard compliance. The FA³ST Ecosystem significantly reduces these hurdles and enables efficient, standards-compliant implementation.

Thanks to the modular structure, administration shells can be flexibly created, validated, hosted and used. At the trade fair, we will demonstrate the use of FA³ST tools for small robots (Penguin Bots) and products. In addition, visitors will have the opportunity to create a simple AAS with just a few clicks as the basis for a Digital Product Passport (DPP) and to work interactively with the AAS without any prior knowledge of AAS.

AI data platform of the AI Alliance Baden-Württemberg

Sharing AI assets for cross-sector AI applications

The "KI-Allianz Baden-Württemberg eG" has the goal of creating an internationally competitive AI ecosystem for Baden-Württemberg. To this end, six regions are pooling their competences. The Fraunhofer IOSB is playing a leading role with its expertise in open data spaces and AI Systems Engineering methodology.

The “Data Platform” project of the AI-Allianz BW is developing a platform that is operational, customizable for companies, public and scientific institutions according to a private-public partnership model based on the following principles:

Generation, administrative staff and sharing of data and AI models
Observance of ethical and legal compatibility
Added value through services, cross-sector linking and standardized metadata
Access to computing resources for executing AI models.

Our exhibit “AI Ecosystem” illustrates how the work of community managers in the regions of the AI Alliance Baden-Württemberg can be supported by an AI-based infrastructure. The infrastructure is implemented using a retrieval augmented generation (RAG) system that has been trained with documents about AI-relevant activities, initiatives, and organizations and has an interface to the AI data platform so that it can also be used to search for AI assets (data and models) for AI applications.

Automated Submodel Generation & Eclipse AASPortal

We present a solution for the automated generation of valid AAS Submodel instances. Within seconds the content from an input source (image, pdf or web content) is processed and a valid submodel instance is created. At the moment we support the creation of the SM DigitalNameplate by making a photo of the physical nameplate, inserting the product datasheet or providing the link to the webshop of the physical asset.

Industrial Cybersecurity

ISuTest^® – Automated vulnerability scanning for industrial automation components

The Industrial Security Testing Framework ISuTest^® is a tool for finding vulnerabilities in the implementations of automation components. ISuTest^® is designed as an open, extensible framework, setting it apart from commercial competitors with closed-source software. The direct target group of ISuTest^® is manufacturers and integrators of automation components. It supports its users from setting up a vulnerability test to executing it and isolating vulnerabilities so that the developer can reproduce the error and subsequently fix it.

OPC UA – Global Discovery Service for certificate management

Modern industrial plants are highly networked and must be secured. As an important building block for Industrie 4.0 plants, the established OPC UA protocol offers precisely the security functions required for this. However, precise planning is required to implement these in practice and to embed them in existing security infrastructures.

Due to our many years of OPC UA security expertise, we at Fraunhofer IOSB can support our partners in precisely this area. We offer evaluated security concepts for OPC UA Pub/Sub and Client/Server, such as:

Deployment/implementation of a Global Discovery Server for certificate management
Connection to public key infrastructures

Cybersecurity Training Lab for Energy and Water Supply

The Cybersecurity Training Lab of Fraunhofer IOSB-AST offers a comprehensive training and consulting portfolio for critical infrastructure operators. Teleoperation & 5G

Remote control of a mobile machine from a distance of 200 km and Environment Perception Kit

Experience research results live, including from the AKIT-PRO and ROBDEKON projects: a mobile machine located 200 kilometers away in the real-world laboratory for autonomous mobile machines in Ilmenau can be remotely controlled via a control center module with a steering wheel and pedals. Live views from the 3D sensors, camera streams from the vehicle and the perspectives of other cameras in the living lab are available.

The plan is to remotely control the mobile machine in real time for two hours a day. The rest of the time, a digital twin of the real vehicle is available in a virtual replica of the living lab for autonomous machines, which behaves like the mobile machine. Also being presented is the so-called Environment Perception Kit – an easy-to-install upgrade kit for retrofitting machines with partially and fully autonomous functions.

Fraunhofer IOSB-INA in the 5G Arena

5G offers the possibility of realizing a wide range of applications with its current and future releases. In particular, the real-time capability of 5G enables applications such as mission-critical communications, remote train operation, and factory automation. These three verticals will be presented by Fraunhofer IOSB-INA at this year's Hannover Messe in the 5G Arena.

Project 5G SIMONE

As part of the 5G SIMONE project, the consortium is investigating the suitability of 5G for rail vehicles. The development work is carried out on the MONOCAB test field in Extertal, where there is a 6 km long route network that is used for research and development work. In addition, developments such as 5G-based transmission of perception technology, consisting of lidar, camera and other sensor technology, are being tested in the SmartFactoryOWL or at the project partner Deutsche Bahn Systemtechnik GmbH in Minden.

TETRA++

TETRA digital radio quickly reaches its limits when it comes to mission-critical communication. Only by coupling or expanding it with a broadband technology, such as 5G, will live video telephony and other broadband services become possible. The TETRA++ project, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV), is addressing the research question of the extent to which the services anchored in the 3GPP standard as Mission Critical (MC) are able to map TETRA services and expand them accordingly. The consideration takes place in the scope of private mobile radio and public mobile radio.

5G4Automation

Digitalization is opening up new possibilities for technological, economic and social change. 5G technology is crucial for implementing Industrie 4.0 and ensuring the international competitiveness of German companies. However, there is a need to validate specific industrial use cases and provide tools for implementation.

The aim of the project is to systematically support companies in the development and evaluation of 5G products and services in multi-access networks. To this end, guidelines and demonstrators are being created in research institutions.

IoT Flood forecasting and warning system

Flooding and heavy rainfall events are on the increase due to climate change. These can pose challenges for cities and municipalities. To better prepare communities for flooding and heavy rainfall, we are working on a number of projects, including the flood information system. This project focuses on developing a high-performance information system that provides emergency services and the public with important information about extreme weather events at an early stage.

5G Learning Centers

The aim of the project is to explore the advantages and limitations of 5G technology for the vocational training of industrial-technical and commercial occupations, such as tool mechanics or industrial clerks. To this end, specific learning scenarios for learning by and for 5G are being developed and tested in four vocational colleges. To this end, learning factories are being set up where commercial and technical vocational training students can learn together.
